FAQ's
What should I use as bait in the trap?
Our technicians have found the best bait to encourage possums inside the trap is an apple. Our technicians would cut the apple in half and secure the half apple to the back of the cage so the possum sets off the footplate when trying to eat the apple. The technicians would then use the other half of the apple to rub down the cage externally, possums have a strong sense of smell and this can help in encouraging them into the cage.
Where should the possum trap be set up?
The most important thing is to ensure the possum trap is set up on a level surface. If the possum trap moves as the possum interacts with it the possum may be reluctant to walk in to the trap or the door may be released before the possum has fully entered the trap.
How often should I check the possum trap?
Please ensure you check the trap every two hours when it is set, possums can get very stressed once they are trapped so it is best if they are re-released as soon as possible.
How do you release the possum from the trap?
To release the possum from the trap you can open the doors at either end of the cage, our Team would recommend releasing the possum from the front door, furtherest from the footplate as this is the easiest to open.
Will the possum try to bite and scratch me?
When possums are trapped they can become stressed and as a result they may try to bite or scratch you, our possum cage has a steel cover over the handle area to protect you during the transportation process. Whilst moving the possum it is best to have a cover over the cage this could be a blanket or jacket to keep it dark as this will help keep the possum calm.
